Sorry for the delay in getting out our weekly update. This week has tuckered me out!
A week at a glance:
Reading Core:
*This week, we continued our unit around Natural Disasters. Students wrote an essay comparing earthquakes and hurricanes. We read a literary text called "Eight Days," where students are learning from the first person point of view how natural disasters impact people who experience them.
Science:
We continued with our weather unit. Students have been utilizing technology to learn about the different natural disasters, where they occur, why they occur, and how they impact living things. This week, students added to their reports how plate tectonics, erosion/deposition, and climate impacts living things/the Earth’s surface in regards to their chosen natural disaster. Next week students will be learning how scientists measure their natural disaster, writing an escape plan for humans that might be caught in the natural disaster, and Sandy Thompson, an architect from Zaga Designs, will be presenting to the 5th grade about what she has to plan for when she is designing buildings in relation to possible natural disasters.
5th Grade Math:
*We learned long division with interpreting remainders. We also learned " decimal division," where a remainder is in decimal form (26/8=3.25). Please review long division and multi-digit multiplication with your kiddos this weekend. We will have our test next Thursday/Friday!
HW: Lesson 23 and 28 from their workbook due Wednesday signed on the pink sheet! Students can also practice IXL at home for the "starred" problems!
6th Grade Math:
*We have been working on negative and positive integers and rational numbers on a number line. We have been working with stories to describe scenarios that can explain the relationship between positive and negative numbers. Give your child a positive number and a negative number and ask him/her to explain the relationship between those two numbers.
**On Thursday, Miss Long, our University of Colorado Denver Intern, is required to teach a whole class lesson. She will be teaching the "Hour of Code" lesson presented from Google and Donors Choose. We have a chance to receive $200 dollars from Donors Choose and be entered to win $5,000! Sounds fun and I can't wait to see what the class does with this hour of code.
Writing:
*Students finished writing a comparison essay this week on plant and animal cells. The text we referenced to write this essay came from 9th grade biology books. There were many difficult words and I'm proud at how students were able to take a difficult topic to make basic meaning. Ask your child some of the similarities differences between plant and animal cells.
Extra:
* Thanksgiving Lunch - Thursday, November 16th. Check the Edison website for lunch times.
* Science Fair - Friday, November 17th. Thank you for your participation!
* Thanksgiving Break! No School November 20th - 24th.
* Report cards go home next week.

Also please get any MED forms signed by your pediatrician and returned to Nurse Patty as soon as possible after the information session. This includes over the counter meds as well.
