Happy “Friday”! Teachers have planning days tomorrow and Friday, so please do not send your child to school. There also is NO SCHOOL Friday, November 3rd!
A week at a glance:
Reading Core:
*This week, we began our next unit around Natural Disasters. Students participated in a gallery walk, did a close read for hurricanes and earthquakes, analyzed the cause and effect, and practiced context clues! We encourage students to find the meaning of words, write the definition, and draw a picture. The visuals help imprint these words into their memory!
Science:
We continued with our weather unit. Students have been utilizing technology to learn about the different natural disasters, where they occur, why they occur, and how they impact living things. Students created a report on their natural disaster and presented to their peers. They will use this report for our final exhibition! We will move onto data collection for natural disasters next week!
5th Grade Math:
*We continued our second unit of Multiplication and Division. Students learned how to apply the associative and distributive property when multiplying multi-digit numbers (426 x 78) and estimate by rounding (400x80). We applied this skill to DECIMALS. If you multiply by a tenths, your answer is in tenths (same with hundredths). Ex:
2.5 x 20 = 25 tenths times 20 = 500 tenths = 50.0
Students learned how to do this using standard algorithm as well as an area model.
Students also learned how to divide by 10. 12000/600 is the same as 12000/100/6. Divide by 100 first, then by 6 (120/6=20). We will continue with division next week!
HW: Lesson 16 (pg. 87-89) from the workbook due Wednesday signed on the hot pink sheet! Students can also practice IXL at home for the "starred" problems!
6th Grade Math:
*We finished our divisions of fractions test last week. Please review these with your child. Corrections can be made to increase grades if desired. We have also been working on a coherence task around when we potentially see multiplication and division of fractions in the real world, through a cookbook assignment. This is due Monday morning. We will be moving onto our number sense unit with positive and negative integers.
Writing:
*Students published a creative story this week. The due date is Monday morning so if your child did not finish at school, please have them complete this at home!
