A week at a glance:
Reading Core:
*This week, we continued our third unit on American Sports with our focus question being “why are sports important in American Culture?” Students participated in a reading of informational texts, identifying the author’s opinion and supporting evidence.
Science:
We began our Young Ameritowne unit this week! Students took a “tour” of Ameritowne, learned about different types of economies, and supply/demand, and filled out their signature cards to open their Young Ameritowne accounts. Next week, we will begin learning about banking!
5th Grade Math:
*We continued our 3rd unit of fractions. Students learned how to add/subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators, finding a common denominator and demonstrating this with a rectangular model. Students also learned how to add and subtract mixed numbers, while finding the missing part of an equation. We will tentatively have our unit test next Wednesday/Thursday, so helping your child prepare/review for this with their journals, workbooks, and videos will greatly benefit them!
If you would like to continue reviewing this with your child, feel free to look at Engage New York 5th Grade Module 3. We have learned through lesson 14. J
HW: Workbook Lessons 12 and 13 front and back!
6th Grade Math:
*We finished our number sense unit around positive/negative numbers, absolute value, opposites, and coordinate grids. Students made fantastic games for the fourth graders. I was so impressed with the quality of work put into these projects. Next week we will work on a 6th grade math skill refresher and then move into our Expressions and Equations unit when we return from break.
Writing:
*THANK YOU to all who came to Literacy Night! This week, students published and shared their published creative Grinch stories. These are coming home with your kiddo today!
