I hope you all had a WONDERFUL break with your family. This is a reminder that there is NO SCHOOL for students on Monday as we are observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day. :)
A week at a glance:
Reading Core:
*This week, we continued our third unit on American Sports continuing our focus question from “why are sports important in American Culture?” Students began learning about specific sports heroes who broke barriers, such as Jackie Robinson, as well as analyzed what was going on in the world to create this barrier. We identified the author’s opinion, supporting evidence, and cause/effect.
Science:
We continued our Young Ameritowne unit this week. We learned how to write deposit slips, checks, and record those things into a check book register. Students learned about the benefits of debit/credit cards and even budgeted funding for a family of four. PLEASE look at our sign up genius for volunteer opportunities coming up for this unit!
5th Grade Math:
*We began our 4th module of multiplication and division of fractions and decimal fractions. Students learned how fractions are division through multiple forms (unit form, standard form, standard algorithm, tape diagram, etc). The links for this unit on youtube is attached. We will begin lesson 6 on Tuesday.
HW: Lesson 2 and 3 in workbook front and back!
6th Grade Math:
*We began our 4th module of expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking. We are at the conceptual stage of this unit through answering “why” order of operations are used to evaluate expressions and “why” variables help us fill in for an unknown. Please review the homework each night with your child to ensure he/she is bringing questions to class if needed.
Writing:
*We continued our opinion unit and focused on argumentative writing. This week, students learned how to effectively use dialogue in writing while also planning, drafting, and editing a piece around recess. Students learned how to express facts, their feelings, and compromises of arguments. We will continue this unit next week with the topic of homework.

- We will be visiting Skinner for a visit on Wednesday, January 17th. There is nothing that you need to do. We will be walking over after specials. Once at Skinner, we will participate in group tours and learn a little about the school. If you have scheduled visits with Skinner keep doing so. This is just another opportunity for your child to see Skinner during the school day.
- SNARF’S Night is Wednesday, January 17th. Order SNARF’S and mention Edison at checkout to support our PTA.
- Enrichment and clubs begin NEXT week. Check the Enrichment Website for more information!
- Bit.ly/5thvolunteer: Don't forget to sign up for volunteer options in 5th grade! (Ameritowne Interviews 1/26)
