A week at a glance:
Reading Core:
*This week, we finished our unit around Roald Dahl using the book Twits! Students researched countries in Africa that the Mugglewumps could live and created a newspaper using inferencing skills on the Twits disappearance. We will be writing Roald Dahl inspired stories in writing next week. We also began our next unit on the American Revolution as students used their inferencing skills with artifacts to draw conclusions on what we will be learning in Social Studies after Human Body.
Science:
We continued our human body unit. Students focused on how the skeletal and muscular systems work together to help the body thrive. Students were assigned in groups to certain areas and we compiled this on one large human body. They were so creative! J We moved onto the circulatory and respiratory system and dissected a sheep heart! Our driving question for this unit is "how do our healthy habits and environmental factors affect how the human body systems work together?"
5th Grade Math:
*We continued our 4th module of multiplication and division of fractions and decimal fractions. Students learned how fractions are division through multiple forms (unit form, standard form, standard algorithm, tape diagram, etc). Students learned how to divide a fraction of a whole and a whole of a fraction while demonstrating this on a tape diagram/visual. Students applied this with word problems. Students also learned how to divide decimals. The links for this unit on youtube is attached. We ended on lesson 31. Our plan is to have our unit test on Wednesday/Thursday next week, so please review these skills with your kiddos!
HW: IXL/Mathfacts AND workbook pages 2 of their choice
6th Grade Math
*We are focusing on 5th grade skills in preparation for state testing. We are touching up on our operations with fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and Geometry. So far students have been diving deep into addition and subtraction of fractions with great success. They may not love showing their work in models, but these models are showing a deep conceptual understanding of fractions.
HW: Whatever isn’t finished during class time.
Writing:
*We finished our descriptive essays that used all six human body system and wrote an overall descriptive essay! If your child did not finish, it is due on Monday morning! Next week we will begin chapter extensions to some Roald Dahl stories. These extensions will be published for Author’s Tea.
Extra:
* Bit.ly/5thvolunteer: Don't forget to sign up for volunteer options in 5th grade!
* Spring Break: No school for students 3/24-4/2
Have a great weekend!
