Hello all,
I hope your new year is off to a fabulous start! We are currently working on finishing up our human body systems unit. As we prepare to do so, we have a super fun activity planned for next week. You read it correctly, heart dissections! This is one of my favorite activities of the year, but I need your help. I would love to have a handful of parent volunteers to help aid the kids with scalpel handling, pictures, moral support, etc. Each table group will have one heart to dissect. We’ve talked about this in class a bit to prepare. This is a sheep heart, which closely resembles a human heart. We’ve also discussed how animals donate their bodies to science so this is not an inhumane activity. The sheep had already died and in an effort to use all pieces of the animal, we get the chance to perform a dissection. So if you are available, interested, or need an excuse to become available the date of the dissection will be Thursday, January 21, 2016. This is next Thursday. We will be dissecting from 10-11am. Please let me know if you can make it to this fun filled science event. Thanks, Mrs. Archibald Hi all,
I hope all is well with you. The cruise was not as fun as you would think. Let’s just say putting 37 family members onto a boat for 7 days is not a good idea… Anyways, I’m sure there will be questions so here’s what is going to happen next Friday. From 1-2 during writing we will share our creative stories from literacy night as a class. (PS. Literacy night is on the 17th) Then from 2-3:15 we will have our holiday party. Students are allowed to bring in holiday snacks to share if they choose. I’m also open for some good holiday movies if anyone has any appropriate movies in your DVD collections. Last year we watched Elf. Let me know if you have any questions regarding the party. One last note, please make sure you are helping your child monitor their internet usage. Review internet safety with them including logging in and out of email accounts on public computers appropriately. Also discuss what to do if they come across inappropriate websites or videos as to how you would like them to report those sites to you or another trusted adult. We know there’s a plethora of information at everyone’s finger tips, so let’s be proactive in keeping everyone safe. Thanks, Mrs. Archibald This is the last chance to sign up for conferences!

So this really only pertains to people who are helping out with the haunted house this Friday. Also attached is a rough sketch of a map for those of you who will be helping set up the house during the day on Friday. Remember this is a rough sketch and you have creative liberty to make this house awesome! I’ll be picking up the fog permit today from DFD so we do not have the alarms go off during the event. Ms. Barston and I truly appreciate all of your help. Without you, we couldn’t make this possible and the kids love it so much every year. Thank you! Jenn & Kate

Hello all,
The past two weeks have gone by so quickly! Boy do we have such a lovely group of kids this year! I’m just checking in to make sure everything is going well on your end. In math we are working with ratios and equivalent ratios to solve ratio word problems. Everyone has been doing really well when they’re not overthinking what the problem is simply asking. There have been some difficult questions that have challenged all of our thinking! Wow! Keep up the great work. We are transitioning into our matter unit for science. There are going to be lots of exciting lessons coming up! Keep checking in with your child to see what they are working on in class. Probe to get more than the typical “it’s ok” response! We’re starting with molecular structure of solids, liquids, and gases. In writing we are diving into personal narratives. Especially this week, we are discussing a time when we were challenged. While in reading we are working with complex text surrounding human rights to discover difficult vocabulary and summarize our reading. I’m excited to see our vocabulary learned being used in other subjects! Please note the Fall Festival is coming upon us quickly, Friday, October 23rd. Ms. Barston, Mr. Roberts, and I need your help! 5th grade is responsible for the candy apples and the haunted house. Which are really only successful with people like YOU! So please let me know if you can help set up during the day on October 23rd, if you can help collect tickets during the festival, if you can help take down after the fall festival, or if you can donate caramel apples. If you have any ideas to improve the haunted house, please help us! Ms. Bartson and I have an idea for a kiddie area for the smaller kids and the big area for the 5th graders to be in charge of that night. PS. We learned the hard way about not having a smoke machine! Sorry about last year… As always let me know if you need anything or have questions/concerns. Thanks so much! Mrs. Archibald Jenn Archibald 5th Grade Rm. 202 Edison Elementary |
